Barça youngster Andrés Cuenca joins Sporting Gijón in three-way transfer dance

Barcelona's promising 18-year-old central defender Andrés Cuenca heads to Sporting Gijón on loan, with his future already mapped out for a move to Como in Italy.

Barcelona’s teenage defensive talent Andrés Cuenca makes the step up to professional football with Sporting Gijón, in what appears to be a carefully orchestrated career development plan involving three clubs.

Three-club arrangement

The 18-year-old centre-back from Córdoba has joined Sporting Gijón from Barcelona in a rather interesting three-way transfer operation that had stalled in recent days before finally going through. The youngster, who had been playing in Spain’s fourth tier (Segunda RFEF), will wear the number 44 shirt and technically be registered with Sporting’s B team, though he’ll train and play with the first team.

What makes this move particularly fascinating is that Cuenca isn’t just heading to Asturias for a standard loan. Sporting are essentially acting as an intermediary step in the player’s development before he eventually moves to Italian side Como, where former Barça legend Cesc Fàbregas is involved in the project.

Quick integration

Cuenca arrived in Asturias on Thursday, accompanied by his agents. After passing his medical examinations, he immediately joined training with Borja Jiménez’s squad ahead of Sunday’s league fixture at Ipurua. Though the signing hadn’t been officially announced at the time, Sporting had already secured permission from Barcelona to integrate him into training sessions, helping him adapt to his new teammates and tactical setup.

Market closed for Sporting

Barring any last-minute surprises (which aren’t expected), Sporting have now completed their winter transfer business with three new additions:

  • Brian Oliván (free transfer before the window opened)
  • Andrés Ferrari (attacking reinforcement)
  • Andrés Cuenca (defensive addition)

Meanwhile, three players have departed Gijón during this window:

  • Yann Kembo (loaned to Ibiza)
  • Caicedo and Cortés (both had loans terminated before joining Argentine club Huracán)

With their squad now finalised, Sporting will be looking to maintain their position near the top of the Segunda División table as they push for promotion in the second half of the season. Proper job!
