Celta's last-gasp swoop: Álvaro Núñez signs until 2030 in deadline day drama

Celta Vigo secured Elche defender Álvaro Núñez with just five minutes left in the transfer window, signing the 25-year-old right-back on a long-term deal until 2030.

Just when everyone thought Celta had shut up shop for the transfer window, the Galician outfit pulled a right rabbit out of the hat, securing Elche defender Álvaro Núñez with literally five minutes to spare before the deadline slammed shut.

The Deal

The 25-year-old right-back has put pen to paper on a massive contract that’ll keep him at Balaídos until 2030 - that’s the remainder of this season plus four more years. Not too shabby for job security, is it?

Celta forked out around €1.5 million for his services, with that figure including a portion the player himself has apparently waived. Elche haven’t been mugs about it either, making sure they’ve secured a 10% sell-on clause should Núñez end up moving on for big money down the line.

Worth noting that Núñez was heading into the final months of his contract at Elche, set to become a free agent this summer - making this a smart bit of business for the selling club rather than losing him for nowt.

The Player

Núñez has been an absolute fixture in the Elche starting XI this season:

  • Started all 19 matches in the first half of the season
  • Racked up a hefty 1,652 minutes of playing time
  • Only missed recent games due to a groin issue (pubalgia)

Versatility seems to be part of the attraction here - while primarily a right-back, new gaffer Giráldez could also deploy him on the right side of a back three if he fancies mixing things up tactically.

Celta’s Vision

The Vigo club seems proper chuffed with their new acquisition. Their official statement describes Núñez as an offensive-minded defender who:

  • Loves getting forward down the flank
  • Excels in combination play
  • Delivers quality crosses
  • Brings intensity to both defensive and attacking phases
  • Has an eye for goal from advanced positions

The club highlighted his “competitive hunger and room for growth” - suggesting they see him as part of their long-term project rather than just a quick fix.

With this eleventh-hour signing, Celta have strengthened their defensive options while adding another attacking dimension from the back. Not a bad way to cap off the January transfer window, even if they did leave it till the last possible moment!
