Huesca beat the clock with double deadline day swoop
SD Huesca completed their winter transfer window with two last-gasp signings - Ghanaian midfielder Michael Agbekpornu and Uruguayan winger Ignacio Laquintana joining the relegation-threatened side.
Just as the transfer window was about to slam shut, Huesca pulled off two eleventh-hour deals to complete their winter overhaul, bringing their January tally to seven new faces in a desperate bid to avoid the drop.
Deadline day drama
The Aragonese outfit managed to secure the services of Ghanaian defensive midfielder Michael Agbekpornu on a free transfer after he terminated his contract with Croatian side Slaven Belupo. The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a deal running until 2028, addressing a crucial position of need for the struggling Segunda División side.
Agbekpornu brings limited but solid experience, having previously played in his native Ghana and Albania before his Croatian stint. This season, he’d made 17 appearances for Slaven Belupo, chipping in with a goal and an assist.
Just before the window closed its curtains, Huesca also confirmed the loan signing of Uruguayan winger Ignacio Laquintana from Brazilian top-flight outfit Red Bull Bragantino. The 26-year-old arrives on a temporary deal until the end of the season, with Huesca securing an option to make the move permanent if things go swimmingly.
Complete squad transformation
These two signings cap off what can only be described as a proper January clear-out at Huesca. The club had spent most of deadline day focusing on outgoings, with Ntamack, Albarracín and Chatiliez all shown the door before the late arrivals were announced.
The wholesale changes reflect the club’s desperate situation as they battle to maintain their Segunda División status. It’s a proper roll of the dice from the Aragonese outfit, who’ll be hoping their seven new recruits can hit the ground running.
For Huesca fans, they’ll be crossing their fingers that this transfer window revolution doesn’t end up being a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. Only time will tell if this dramatic squad overhaul proves to be the tonic for their relegation worries.
