Huesca beat the clock with double deadline day swoop for Agbekpornu and Laquintana

SD Huesca complete their winter transfer window revolution with two last-gasp signings, bringing their January additions to seven as they fight for Segunda División survival.

Huesca have pulled off two eleventh-hour deadline day deals, securing Ghanaian midfielder Michael Agbekpornu and Uruguayan winger Ignacio Laquintana to cap off a transformative January window.

Deadline Day Drama

The Aragonese outfit left it proper late, didn’t they? With the transfer window’s curtains nearly drawn, Huesca managed to complete their sixth and seventh winter signings in what can only be described as a wholesale squad revolution. Talk about cutting it fine!

Agbekpornu, a 27-year-old defensive midfielder, arrives on a free transfer after terminating his contract with Croatian side Slaven Belupo. The Ghanaian enforcer has put pen to paper on a lengthy deal that keeps him at El Alcoraz until 2028 - a proper statement of intent from the Segunda División strugglers.

Meanwhile, as the clock was about to strike midnight, Huesca announced Laquintana as their final piece of business. The 26-year-old Uruguayan winger joins on loan from Brazilian top-flight outfit Red Bull Bragantino until the end of the season, with the Spanish club securing an option to make the move permanent.

January Revolution

Huesca’s sporting directors have been busy little bees this winter:

  • Earlier on deadline day, they focused on outgoings, with Ntamack, Albarracín, and Chatiliez all heading for the exit door
  • Agbekpornu brings much-needed defensive steel to the midfield - a profile the club had been targeting
  • The Ghanaian had contributed one goal and one assist in 17 appearances for Slaven Belupo this season
  • Prior to his Croatian adventure, Agbekpornu’s career had been limited to spells in his native Ghana and Albania

This complete makeover of the squad has one clear aim: securing survival in Spain’s second tier. The new boys will need to hit the ground running if they’re to help Huesca avoid the drop - no time for settling in when you’re in a right old dog and bone (rhyming slang for ‘relegation scrap’, for the uninitiated).
