Ibiza's new keeper Tao Paradowski: A name shrouded in mystery and an unusual footballing journey
UD Ibiza have signed young French goalkeeper Tao Paradowski, whose unique name has an animated origin story and whose path to professional football breaks conventional wisdom.
A goalkeeper with Polish roots, French international pedigree, and a name inspired by a Japanese anime character has just landed on the party island.
The mystery behind the name
Tao Paradowski, Ibiza’s latest signing between the sticks, carries a name that’s got the locals chatting. The 19-year-old from Saint-Paul in Réunion Island was named after the hero from ‘The Mysterious Cities of Gold’ - a cult animated series that clearly left an impression on his parents.
Paradowski’s journey to Ibiza is as unique as his moniker. Growing up on Réunion Island (a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean for those who slept through geography), he juggled both judo and football before committing to goalkeeping at just four years old.
“I was born with a ball in my hands while my brother Djibril had one at his feet,” he once told Midi Libre, explaining how his sibling’s shooting practice shaped his early development.
From Nancy to Ibiza via France’s youth teams
The young keeper’s career has taken him through the youth ranks at Nancy before spells at Nimes and Pau. His talents haven’t gone unnoticed by the French national setup either - he received a call-up to France’s U20 World Cup squad, though he didn’t make an appearance.
Despite his Polish surname, Paradowski’s international ambitions remain firmly with Les Bleus:
“I know Poland is following me, but I’d only say yes if I had absolutely no chance with the French team, because that remains my absolute dream.”
Breaking the mold
Standing at just 1.80m (5’11”), Paradowski has had to battle height prejudice throughout his development:
- “They told me I was too short. It came up every year, but it forged my character,” he’s previously admitted.
Even his footballing inspirations are a bit off the beaten track. While most young keepers might name-check Neuer or Courtois, Paradowski’s hero is Everton and England’s Jordan Pickford - another keeper who’s had to overcome height stereotypes.
“I love Everton. Outside of France, it’s my favorite club,” he confessed to Foot Mercato. “Among the elite clubs, I really like Bayern, and in France I like Marseille.”
Now the young keeper will be looking to reach new heights from his base in Ibiza. The Celeste faithful will be hoping his name - particularly that Polish surname - proves prophetic when it comes to stopping shots.
