Las Palmas hit the January wall as promotion push falters

The Canary Islanders have collected just five points from a possible fifteen in January, raising concerns about a repeat of last season's promotion collapse.

The yellow submarine seems to be sinking just when they need to stay afloat, with January proving a cruel month for Las Palmas’ promotion ambitions.

January Blues

Las Palmas have kicked off 2026 with the handbrake firmly on. A measly five points from fifteen available tells the story of a month that’s left the yellow half of the Canary Islands scratching their heads. And it’s not just the results causing the headache – it’s the performances too.

The islanders have struggled through January with more shadows than sunshine, dropping points against opponents of varying quality and showing a worrying inability to maintain competitive levels for a full ninety minutes. Even in supposedly favorable fixtures, they’ve failed to stamp their authority, while against tougher opposition, previously hidden structural weaknesses have been brutally exposed.

A promising start gone sour

What makes it all the more frustrating is how the year began. Las Palmas started 2026 with a win against Zaragoza, still in the hunt for top spot. A subsequent draw with Deportivo left fans feeling their team deserved more despite the shared points.

But something went properly Pete Tong at El Sardinero. Shipping four goals and displaying alarming fragility, many supporters initially wrote it off as a blip. The subsequent Córdoba match proved otherwise, with those same problems becoming even more evident. The recent draw against Sanse has only deepened the concerns.

Unwelcome déjà vu

Recent history offers little comfort to the Las Palmas faithful. Last season, January marked the beginning of the end for their promotion push. After closing 2024 with a victory against Espanyol – establishing a six-point cushion to the promotion cut-off – the new year brought two defeats and a draw that triggered a gradual decline.

Today, the parallels are impossible to ignore. Beyond the numbers, what’s truly worrying supporters on the island is the feeling that January has once again become that treacherous month that transforms hope into anxiety.

With the promotion race in Segunda División heating up, Las Palmas need to find their form sharpish if they’re to avoid another mid-season collapse. The question now is whether they can stop the rot before history repeats itself completely.
