Lookman signs for Atleti until 2030 as Simeone gets his man

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman completes medical and puts pen to paper on long-term deal with Atlético Madrid after impressive spell at Atalanta.

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has officially joined Atlético Madrid, signing a mammoth contract that will keep him at the Metropolitano until 2030 after sailing through his medical on Monday.

Deal Confirmed

The 28-year-old’s transfer was initially announced on Sunday evening, but the club held off on the official welcome until the mandatory medical checks were completed. No dramas there - the Nigerian passed with flying colours and is now officially a Colchonero.

While Lookman missed Monday’s evening training session at Cerro del Espino, he’s expected to join up with his new teammates on Tuesday. There’s even a chance the new boy could make his debut as early as Thursday in the Copa del Rey clash against Real Betis, should Cholo Simeone decide to throw him straight into the mixer.

Impressive Pedigree

Lookman arrives in Madrid with some serious credentials after finding his best form in Italy. The forward has been on a proper journey throughout his career:

  • Started at Charlton Athletic
  • Played for Everton in the Premier League
  • Had spells at RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester
  • Found his shooting boots at Atalanta

It was in Bergamo where Lookman truly came into his own. During his three-and-a-half seasons in Serie A, he established himself as one of Calcio’s most dangerous attackers, notching up an impressive:

  • 55 goals
  • 27 assists

Those are the kind of numbers that had Atleti reaching for the chequebook, and the Spanish side will be hoping he can maintain that scoring form in La Liga.

London Roots to Madrid Glory?

For a lad who started his career in London with Charlton, it’s been quite the journey to one of Spain’s biggest clubs. Lookman has certainly taken the scenic route to the top, but after his Italian renaissance, Atleti fans will be hoping he can deliver the goods in the famous red and white stripes.

Simeone now has another attacking option at his disposal as Atlético continue fighting on multiple fronts this season. If the Nigerian can bring his Atalanta form to the Spanish capital, they’ve got themselves a right Bobby Dazzler.
