Mawuli Mensah: The latest piece in Zaragoza's midfield revolution

Real Zaragoza complete their sixth winter signing with 22-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Mawuli Mensah from Real Betis B, adding much-needed depth to their engine room.

Real Zaragoza have finally found their missing midfield piece with the arrival of Mawuli Mensah, capping off what’s been a proper busy winter window for the Segunda División outfit.

The Ghanaian connection

The 22-year-old Ghanaian arrives from Real Betis B, penning a deal until the end of the season with an option that could keep him at La Romareda until 2028. Zaragoza have been desperate for midfield reinforcements, and Mensah becomes their sixth winter signing in what’s shaping up to be a complete squad overhaul.

While he hasn’t featured in the past month, Mensah was a regular fixture in Betis B’s starting eleven this season, racking up 16 appearances and over 1,000 minutes of action. His playing style has drawn comparisons to former Zaragoza man James Igbekeme - a dynamic midfielder who’s comfortable both as a holding player and when pushing forward into more advanced positions.

From Ghana to La Romareda

Mensah’s journey to Zaragoza has been anything but straightforward:

  • Left his native Ghana to pursue European football
  • Cut his teeth at Antequera before catching Betis’ attention
  • Developed his game in Betis’ youth system before this move

The signing represents something of a gamble for Zaragoza, and only time will tell if the club’s punt pays off. But with his energy and versatility, the young Ghanaian could prove to be exactly what the doctor ordered for their midfield struggles.

Busy day at the office

It’s been a right Bobby Moore (busy day for sure) at Zaragoza, with Mensah’s arrival following the earlier confirmations of Juan Larios and Jawad El Yamiq also joining the club. The trio of signings demonstrates Zaragoza’s serious intent to strengthen their squad as they look to climb the table in the second half of the season.
