Rayo's Bernabéu fury could land them in hot water after late Madrid drama

Rayo Vallecano's sporting director and players erupted after controversial late penalty decision gave Real Madrid a 2-1 win in the 99th minute.

Rayo Vallecano officials and players are absolutely fuming after what they see as daylight robbery at the Bernabéu, with potential consequences to follow after their post-match outbursts.

99th minute heartbreak

What a proper shambles this turned into. Rayo were seconds away from a valuable point at the Bernabéu when referee Díaz de Mera awarded Real Madrid a penalty in the 99th minute after a supposed foul by Mendy on Brahim. Mbappé stepped up to convert, giving Los Blancos a 2-1 win that left the visitors absolutely raging.

The referee somehow added 10 minutes of stoppage time despite there being no VAR reviews or significant goal celebrations to warrant such an extension. Talk about giving the big boys a leg up!

Official complaints on record

The referee’s match report details some serious verbals from Rayo’s sporting director David Cobeño, who apparently shouted at the officials: “Sois todos iguales, me cago en mi p*** madre” (“You’re all the same”, followed by a rather colourful Spanish expression).

Cobeño wasn’t the only one with the hump:

  • Pep Chavarría, who was sent off during the match, took to social media claiming “Today is one of the saddest days leaving a stadium. This team deserves respect.” He added that “God is fair and sees everything.”

  • Marta Soriano, wife of Rayo player Isi Palazón, posted a scathing comment accompanied by a clown image, suggesting Madrid needed 10 added minutes, a last-minute penalty and two Rayo red cards to secure the win.

Manager keeps his powder dry

Rayo manager Íñigo Pérez showed more restraint in his post-match presser, refusing to discuss the referee directly. He admitted he expected a lengthy stoppage time but felt his team was defending well without looking likely to concede.

This defeat will be a bitter pill to swallow for Rayo, who came within a whisker of nicking a result at the champions’ backyard. The fallout from their post-match reactions, however, could see some additional penalties coming their way once the disciplinary committee gets involved.

One thing’s for Adam’s sake certain - this one will be talked about in Vallecas for weeks to come.
