Vecino jets to Vigo: Experienced Uruguayan set for Celta switch until 2027

Former Lazio midfielder Matías Vecino arrives in Vigo to complete his move to Celta, signing until 2027 as the Galician club's second winter reinforcement.

Celta Vigo are set to bolster their midfield options with the imminent arrival of experienced Uruguayan international Matías Vecino, who’s traveling to Galicia today to put pen to paper on a deal running until 2027.

Vecino’s arrival

The 34-year-old midfielder is expected to touch down in Vigo this afternoon to complete his move from Lazio. He’ll be signing for the remainder of the current campaign plus an additional season, becoming Celta’s second winter reinforcement following the return of Fer López.

Vecino’s playing time at Lazio had diminished this season, with the veteran managing just 657 minutes across 14 appearances in all competitions. His arrival comes at a crucial time for the Galicians, who’ve been left short in the middle of the park after losing both Fran Beltrán and Damián during the January window.

Zaragoza on the move

While one door opens, another closes. Celta are also working to finalise Bryan Zaragoza’s departure to Roma. The winger, who joined on loan from Bayern Munich, will see his temporary stint in Vigo cut short, though the club will receive a small financial compensation for the early termination.

Quiet deadline day expected

Despite the usual deadline day madness across Europe, things are looking relatively calm at Balaídos. Club sources indicate they don’t anticipate any further movements beyond these two deals as the winter transfer window draws to a close.

The addition of Vecino brings valuable experience to Celta’s squad. The Uruguayan has had quite the career in Italian football, and while he might not have the legs of a 25-year-old anymore, his football brain could be just what the doctor ordered for the Galician outfit.

For Celta fans, having a player of Vecino’s pedigree is a proper Bobby Dazzler in what’s been a challenging season. The midfielder’s international experience with Uruguay and his years battling in Serie A should provide some much-needed steel to the engine room.
