Vecino Swaps Rome for Vigo as Celta Secure Uruguayan Midfield Maestro
Celta Vigo bolster midfield options with experienced Uruguayan international Matías Vecino on an 18-month deal from Lazio, addressing key departures in the January window.
Celta Vigo have pulled off a proper bit of business, securing the signature of Uruguay international midfielder Matías Vecino until 2027 after his contract with Lazio was set to expire this summer.
Experienced Campaigner
The 34-year-old brings a wealth of experience to Balaídos after spending the last thirteen and a half years in Italian football. His CV reads like a proper tour of Serie A with stints at:
- Fiorentina
- Cagliari
- Empoli
- Inter Milan
- Lazio
Before Italy, Vecino cut his teeth at Central Español and Nacional in his native Uruguay. With 69 international caps for La Celeste, Celta are getting a player who’s been around the block and knows his onions in midfield.
Filling the Gaps
The timing couldn’t be better for Celta, who’ve seen their midfield options decimated in the January window. With both Fran Beltrán and Damián heading for the exit door, manager Claudio Giráldez has been left with only Ilaix Moriba, Miguel Román and Hugo Sotelo in central midfield.
Vecino’s arrival, alongside that of Fer López, gives the Galician outfit some much-needed depth in the middle of the park. The Uruguayan could make his debut as soon as this Friday when Celta host Osasuna at Balaídos.
What He Brings
Celta’s official statement highlights Vecino’s versatility to operate both as a central midfielder and in a deeper pivot role. They’re chuffed with his physical presence, ball-winning abilities and distribution skills – all qualities that should slot nicely into Giráldez’s system.
The club clearly view him as a key addition for what they describe as “a decisive stretch of the season.”
Familiar Faces
Vecino won’t be completely in unfamiliar territory when he rocks up in Vigo. He previously shared dressing rooms with current Celta players Marcos Alonso and Radu, which should help him settle in at his new club.
After limited game time at Lazio this season – just 657 minutes across 14 appearances in league and cup – Vecino will be hoping for a more prominent role in his new Spanish adventure.
