Arbeloa spotted at Di Stéfano keeping tabs on Madrid's Youth League stars

The Real Madrid boss was in the stands to watch his former charges take on Marseille in the Youth League knockout stage, showing his continued faith in La Fábrica's talent.

Former Castilla boss and current Real Madrid head coach Álvaro Arbeloa was seen at the Alfredo Di Stéfano Stadium today, watching the club’s U19s battle Olympique Marseille in the Youth League round of 16.

Keeping an eye on familiar faces

Arbeloa wasn’t just there for a casual afternoon out - he was keeping tabs on several players he knows all too well from his previous role. The Madrid youth team’s starting XI featured several lads who were under his wing at Castilla not long ago, including Fortea, Joan Martínez, Mario Rivas, Aguado, Cestero, Thiago Pitarch and Yáñez.

It’s proper nice to see a first-team gaffer taking such interest in the youth setup. Too many managers these days are only concerned with ready-made stars and couldn’t give a monkey’s about what’s happening in the academy.

La Fábrica connection remains strong

Arbeloa’s appearance at the Di Stéfano speaks volumes about his faith in the club’s academy products. Since taking the reins of the first team, he’s already demonstrated his willingness to give youngsters a shot at the big time:

  • Both Cestero and Aguado, who featured in today’s youth match, have been included in several first-team squads recently
  • His presence sends a clear message to all La Fábrica players that the pathway to the first team remains open

Youth League specialist

The current Madrid boss is no stranger to this competition. During his three-year stint managing the Juvenil A team between 2022 and 2025, Arbeloa became the La Fábrica coach with the most games managed in the Youth League (24).

His record in the competition stands at an impressive 16 wins (67%), 4 draws and 4 defeats. Despite his success with Madrid’s youth sides, winning multiple trophies, the Youth League title remained elusive during his tenure - the one bit of silverware that slipped through his fingers.

Today’s appearance shows Arbeloa hasn’t forgotten his roots or the talented youngsters he helped develop. For a club with Real Madrid’s resources, it’s refreshing to see such commitment to nurturing homegrown talent rather than just splashing the cash.
