Barça eyes 2029 Champions League final as Camp Nou showpiece
Barcelona, the city council and Catalonia regional government have submitted initial documentation to UEFA, hoping to host the 2029 Champions League final at the renovated Spotify Camp Nou.
Barcelona FC is making a bold play to bring European football’s biggest night to the Catalan capital, with plans to showcase their renovated stadium on the grandest stage possible.
Joint bid submitted
Barça, along with Barcelona City Council and the Catalonian government, have officially thrown their hat in the ring to host the 2029 Champions League final. The three parties have submitted the initial paperwork to UEFA, proposing the Spotify Camp Nou as the venue for European club football’s showpiece event.
This is just the opening gambit in what will be a lengthy bidding process. The documentation submitted now allows UEFA to begin evaluating Barcelona’s suitability as a host city, but the final, complete dossier won’t be due until early June 2026.
Political backing secured
The bid has received strong political support:
- Barcelona’s city government has approved the candidacy and accepted the ‘Host City Agreement’
- The Catalonian regional government has endorsed the bid, believing Barcelona and the club present “the best candidacy” for hosting the final
Facing stiff competition
Barcelona won’t have a clear run at securing the final. UEFA confirmed last October that they’d received expressions of interest from 15 different football associations hoping to host club competition finals in 2028 and 2029.
The Camp Nou’s main rival appears to be London’s Wembley Stadium - proper competition, no two ways about it. UEFA’s Executive Committee will make their final decision in September 2026, giving both venues plenty of time to polish their proposals.
Renovation timeline critical
The timing is significant as the Camp Nou’s extensive renovation works are scheduled to be completed before 2029. The stadium is also being considered as a potential venue for the 2030 World Cup final, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Joan Laporta, speaking from Albacete where Barça were playing in the Copa del Rey, confirmed: “Barcelona doesn’t stop, we keep making decisions and yes, this proposal has been made, and we trust it will become reality.”
If successful, it would be a massive feather in the cap for the Catalan club and a fitting way to showcase their modernized stadium to the world. The Camp Nou hosting the Champions League final? That would be proper Bobby Moore (score)!
