Betis sporting director reveals Fidalgo signing was Pellegrini's priority over a striker

Manu Fajardo discusses Betis' transfer strategy, explaining why the club opted for Álvaro Fidalgo rather than the much-discussed striker option during the January window.

Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo has revealed that manager Manuel Pellegrini prioritised signing midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo over a new striker during the January transfer window, despite public speculation suggesting otherwise.

Speaking at Fidalgo’s official presentation alongside club president Ángel Haro, Fajardo offered a fascinating peek behind the curtain at Betis’ transfer strategy and squad planning.

Pellegrini’s surprising priority

For weeks, the narrative around Betis had been the desperate need for a new number nine. However, Fajardo disclosed that internally, the gaffer had different ideas:

“For Manuel, the priority wasn’t the striker due to the burden of other absences,” Fajardo explained. “He demanded more talent and ball possession, hence we advanced the Álvaro Fidalgo move.”

This revelation sheds new light on Betis’ approach to the winter window, with the club ultimately backing their manager’s vision rather than responding to external pressure.

Squad assessment and injuries

Despite numerous injuries hampering the squad, Fajardo remains positive about Betis’ current position:

  • Currently sitting fifth in La Liga
  • Preparing for an important Copa del Rey quarter-final
  • Finished fourth in their Europa League group

“We’re missing important players, but these are sufficient reasons to be satisfied and hopeful about what’s coming in the short and medium term,” he stated.

Bakambu situation clarified

Fajardo also addressed Cédric Bakambu’s decision to stay at the club despite transfer interest, calling for fan support:

“We received interest in Cédric, but we must respect the player’s opinion. I appeal to the fans: whenever he’s worn the Betis shirt, he’s given his all on the pitch.”

Europa League squad changes

Fidalgo is expected to be the new addition to Betis’ Europa League List A for the knockout rounds, but his inclusion will require another player to be removed. Fajardo confirmed a meeting with Pellegrini is planned to finalise this decision before the February 5th deadline.

Brazilian youngster confirmed

The sporting director also confirmed the signing of young Brazilian centre-back Robson for Betis’ reserve team, describing him as “a profile that excites us greatly” and someone who could bring “joy in the present and medium term.”
