Burgos snatch Hugo Cuenca at the death as transfer window slams shut
Paraguay international Hugo Cuenca joins Burgos CF on loan from Genoa with purchase option, while Iván Chapela departs for Tenerife in separate deadline day move.
Just as the transfer window was about to slam shut, Burgos CF pulled a rabbit out of the hat with the loan signing of Paraguayan talent Hugo Cuenca from Italian side Genoa.
Deadline day drama
Talk about cutting it fine! The Segunda División outfit managed to secure the services of the 21-year-old attacking midfielder right at the death. Cuenca, already a full Paraguay international despite his tender age, arrives at El Plantío on a loan deal until the end of the season, with Burgos wisely inserting a purchase option as part of the agreement.
The left-footed playmaker, born in Coronel Oviedo on January 8, 2005, gives Burgos some proper creative options going forward. He’s versatile too - capable of playing centrally behind the striker or cutting in from the right wing, which should give the gaffer some tactical flexibility.
One in, one out
While Cuenca was coming through the door, Iván Chapela was heading for the exit. The Cádiz-born winger has completed a permanent transfer to Tenerife after both clubs reached an agreement. Burgos haven’t been mugs about it though - they’ve retained a percentage of any future sale and included performance-related bonuses in the deal. Smart business that.
Chapela’s time at Burgos was brief to say the least. Having only joined the black and whites in June 2025, his stint by the Arlanzón river ends after just four official appearances. His contribution wasn’t without merit though - he did provide an assist in the opening day 5-1 demolition job against Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa.
What this means for Burgos
The addition of Cuenca suggests Burgos are looking to add some South American flair to their attacking options. At 21, he represents both immediate quality and potential for the future if they trigger that purchase clause.
The Segunda División is a proper dog’s dinner this season with teams scrapping for position, and having a creative spark like Cuenca could make all the difference as we head into the business end of the campaign.
