Burgos snatch Paraguayan wonderkid Hugo Cuenca at transfer deadline
The Segunda División side secured talented youngster Hugo Cuenca on loan from Genoa with an option to buy, while winger Iván Chapela heads to Tenerife in separate deal.
Burgos CF pulled off a proper last-gasp transfer, bringing in Paraguay international Hugo Cuenca just as the window was about to slam shut.
Deadline day drama
Talk about leaving it late! Burgos have managed to secure the services of Hugo Cuenca, the talented 21-year-old Paraguayan attacking midfielder, on a loan deal from Italian side Genoa that’ll run until the end of the season. The Segunda División outfit have also shrewdly negotiated an option to buy the youngster permanently if he impresses at El Plantío.
Cuenca, born in Coronel Oviedo, Paraguay in January 2005, is already a full international for his country despite his tender age - a testament to the potential Burgos have just acquired. The left-footed playmaker brings versatility to the blanquinegros’ attack, capable of operating centrally behind the striker or cutting in from the right wing.
One in, one out
While Burgos fans will be buzzing about their new creative spark, the club has also confirmed the departure of Iván Chapela, who’s off to Tenerife after both clubs reached an agreement for his transfer. Burgos haven’t been mugs about it though - they’ve retained a percentage of any future sale and included performance-based bonuses in the deal.
Chapela’s time at Burgos was brief, having only joined in June 2025. His stint by the Arlanzón River ends with just four official appearances, though he did manage to provide an assist in the season opener - a comprehensive 5-1 victory against Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa.
This bit of transfer business shows Burgos aren’t messing about as they look to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the campaign. The addition of Cuenca could prove to be a right Bobby Dazzler if the youngster lives up to his international pedigree.
