Fidalgo on Betis move: "Impossible to compare myself with Isco"
New Real Betis signing Álvaro Fidalgo speaks about his admiration for Isco, his journey from Mexico, and why the Seville club was his dream destination.
Former Real Madrid academy product and América star arrives at Betis with a humble attitude despite being one of Liga MX’s standout performers.
The Isco Question
Álvaro Fidalgo has made it crystal clear he’s not having any of those Isco comparisons as he begins his new chapter at Real Betis. The 28-year-old Asturian midfielder, fresh off the plane from Club América in Mexico, has signed on until 2030 but isn’t getting carried away with lofty comparisons.
“It’s impossible that I could compare myself with Isco,” Fidalgo insisted during his unveiling. The new Betis man spoke of his former Madrid teammate with genuine awe, placing him alongside Modric and Marcelo as the players who most impressed him in training.
Having come through the Madrid youth ranks himself, Fidalgo knows quality when he sees it, and he’s not about to put himself in the same bracket as one of “Spain’s greatest talents in history.”
Why Betis?
Fidalgo’s move to Betis comes after five successful years in Mexico, where he became a fan favourite at América. When asked about his decision to join Los Verdiblancos, he revealed:
- Sporting director Manu Fajardo “didn’t need to convince me at all”
- The club’s consistency in recent years appealed to him
- The passionate fanbase reminded him of América’s support
“For me it was an unbeatable destination, impossible to have signed for a better place, I say that from the heart,” he explained.
Ready for Action
Despite the transatlantic move, Fidalgo insists he’s “1000% physically ready” for immediate action. Having already played three full 90-minute matches in the Mexican Apertura, he’s declared himself available for Betis’ upcoming Copa del Rey clash.
The midfielder, who can operate in multiple positions across the middle of the park, describes himself as someone who “always wants the ball” and “never hides” on the pitch.
The Solari Connection
Fidalgo credits Santiago Solari as his “football father” - the coach who trusted him at Real Madrid’s youth levels and gave him his first-team debut. It was Solari who later brought him to América, where Fidalgo says he matured from a “boy” of 23 into a proper footballer.
“When I arrived in Mexico, I was still a child, so to speak,” he reflected. “All that pressure to achieve things, to fight for leagues, for championships, for very important playoffs, the clásicos… That made me grow a lot as a footballer.”
With his humble attitude and professional approach, Fidalgo might not be the next Isco, but Betis fans will be hoping he brings some of that América magic to the Benito Villamarín.
