Fidalgo touches down in Seville to kick off Betis chapter

Former América midfielder Álvaro Fidalgo arrives in Sevilla after five-year Mexican stint, meets new teammates and could feature against Atlético in Copa clash

The Asturian midfielder has landed in Andalusia after his emotional farewell to Club América, ready to don the green and white stripes for his new Spanish adventure.

From México with love

Álvaro Fidalgo’s Betis career is officially underway after the Spanish midfielder completed his journey from Mexico to Seville. After wrapping up his five-year stint with Club América in emotional fashion, Fidalgo hopped on a plane to Madrid on Monday before making the final leg of his journey by road to Andalusia.

By Tuesday morning, the new Betis boy was settled in his hotel, conveniently located a stone’s throw from the Luis del Sol training complex where his new teammates have been grafting away.

Meet and greet

Wasting no time getting acquainted with his new surroundings, Fidalgo popped round to the training ground to introduce himself to the Betis squad. The club shared snaps of the midfielder’s first interactions, including handshakes with:

  • Cucho Hernández, who’s racing against the clock to be fit for Thursday’s Copa clash with Atlético
  • Antony, who was putting in the gym work and looks set to be one of Betis’ attacking focal points in the cup tie

Ready for action?

The official unveiling is scheduled for Tuesday evening in the lounge area of the Bermejales complex, with president Ángel Haro and sporting director Manu Fajardo doing the honours.

From Wednesday, it’ll be straight down to brass tacks as Fidalgo joins Pellegrini’s training sessions. The gaffer will have precisely one session to determine whether the new arrival is match-ready for Thursday’s showdown with Simeone’s Atlético at La Cartuja – which would mark his Betis debut.

“A long journey, I left yesterday, twelve hours or so, but finally here, very happy, very grateful for the welcome and really looking forward to playing football, to making my debut,” Fidalgo told reporters upon checking into his hotel this morning.

The former América star added that Betis had been his dream destination “from the first moment” because of “the project, the club, the fans… an unbeatable place.”

Betis are banking on Fidalgo to bring his Mexican magic to La Liga, hoping he’ll be just the ticket to bolster their midfield options for the business end of the season.
