Laporta hails Lamine Yamal as 'a genius' after Copa progression

Barça president Joan Laporta singles out Lamine Yamal and Ronald Araujo for special praise after Barcelona reach Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta couldn’t hide his delight after the Blaugrana secured their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, reserving special praise for teenage sensation Lamine Yamal.

Copa joy for Laporta

Speaking after Barcelona’s victory over Albacete, Laporta was clearly chuffed with the performance despite acknowledging the Segunda División side had made life difficult for the Catalans.

“We controlled the match, but Albacete complicated things for us,” admitted the Barça president, who felt his side were deserving winners on the night as they booked their spot in the final four.

Individual brilliance

Laporta was particularly effusive when discussing two standout performers:

  • Lamine Yamal - The president didn’t mince his words about the teenage phenom, stating simply: “Lamine is a genius, he broke the deadlock.”

  • Ronald Araujo - The Uruguayan defender also received special mention: “I’m especially happy for Araujo, he scored a goal and we’re very satisfied with him. That goal gave us tranquility.”

The president pointed to Barcelona’s attractive playing style as a key factor in their recent results, clearly pleased with the team’s direction under Xavi.

Stadium dreams

Looking further ahead, Laporta couldn’t resist talking up the new Spotify Camp Nou, boldly claiming it “will be the best stadium in Europe” once completed.

The Barça chief outlined his ambitious vision for the venue to host both the 2029 Champions League final and matches during the 2030 World Cup, promising to “work to make it a reality.”

Election talk

Laporta also confirmed Barcelona will begin their presidential election process on February 9th, with several board members - including himself - resigning to stand for re-election.

“Elections are starting, which is part of the democratic normality of a club that belongs to its members,” he explained, expressing hope for strong participation from the socios.

As for the future of vice-president Rafa Yuste, Laporta kept his cards close to his chest, simply stating: “We’ll decide on Monday.”
