Málaga's Unbeaten Run Ends in Controversial Penalty Drama at Anduva
Juanfran Funes' side saw their ten-match unbeaten streak come crashing down after a contentious penalty decision in Miranda de Ebro.
Málaga’s impressive ten-match undefeated run came to a controversial end at Anduva, with referee Moreno Aragón once again at the centre of a storm involving the Costa del Sol outfit.
The Controversial Call
The blanquiazules weren’t at their brilliant best against Mirandés, but the manner of defeat has left a sour taste in the mouths of the travelling contingent. A seemingly routine tussle in the box was deemed worthy of a spot kick by Moreno Aragón – a decision that ultimately proved decisive.
This isn’t the first time this particular official has found himself in hot water with Málaga. The Granada-born referee, who belongs to the Madrid committee, has a lengthy history of contentious calls against the Martiricos side. Their record with him in charge now stands at a measly six wins from 16 matches – proper pants, that.
Funes Plays It Cool
New gaffer Juanfran Funes, whose honeymoon period has abruptly ended after ten league games without defeat, attempted to take the high road in his post-match comments:
“We’ve committed more errors than the referee,” Funes reflected, refusing to make the official the scapegoat despite the dubious nature of the penalty.
The coach’s measured response suggests a desire to keep his players focused on their own performance rather than external factors. Still, reading between the lines, there was clear frustration as he suggested hoping for a “cousin” of this penalty in their next fixture against Cultural.
Keeper Speaks Out
Goalkeeper Herrero was less diplomatic in his assessment, expressing frustration both on the pitch and in the mixed zone afterwards:
- Questioned the consistency of officiating standards
- Suggested the ball wasn’t even heading toward the relevant area
- Expressed desire for players, not officials, to be the protagonists
Historical Tensions
The bad blood between Málaga and Moreno Aragón runs deep. Former manager Sergio Pellicer once famously accused the referee of “adulterating matches” – comments that earned him a three-match touchline ban.
While Málaga may have legitimate grievances, they’ll need to regroup quickly. The defeat is a significant blow to their promotion aspirations in Segunda División, and dwelling on officiating controversies won’t help them bounce back against Cultural in their next fixture.
