Sevilla's Nightmare Season Continues with Mallorca Mauling

Almeyda's men crumble to a 4-1 defeat at Son Moix, leaving them just two points above the relegation zone and tied for most losses in La Liga.

Sevilla’s miserable campaign shows no signs of improving as they continue to flirt dangerously with the drop zone after another defensive horror show.

Same Old Story at Son Moix

Just when you thought Sevilla might string together a decent run, they go and put in another absolute shocker. The Andalusians haven’t managed three consecutive games without defeat since September, and Sunday’s 4-1 hammering at Mallorca continued that sorry trend.

Matías Almeyda rolled the dice with his team selection, handing new signing Maupay a start alongside Akor Adams in attack, while Fábio Cardoso stepped in for the suspended Gudelj. Initially, things didn’t look half bad - Sevilla controlled the early exchanges with Agoumé and Peque dictating play.

But as per usual with this Sevilla side, it all went pear-shaped rather quickly.

VAR Controversy and Brief Hope

The match turned on a controversial penalty awarded to Mallorca after 20 minutes when Virgili went down in the box after minimal contact from Carmona. Despite the dubious nature of the decision, VAR didn’t intervene, and Muriqi converted to put the hosts ahead.

To their credit, Sevilla found an equaliser through Maupay, who showed his finishing quality with his only shot on target. The Frenchman’s goal offered a brief glimpse of what Sevilla’s attack could be with proper service.

Second Half Collapse

Whatever positives Sevilla could take from the first half evaporated after the break. A defensive calamity allowed Samú Costa to restore Mallorca’s lead, exposing once again the structural problems plaguing this team.

Almeyda’s substitutions only made matters worse. Removing the influential Juanlu and Peque for Ejuke and Alexis while switching to a 4-4-2 left Sevilla toothless in attack and even more vulnerable at the back.

As Almeyda admitted post-match: “The second half pains me greatly because our opponents capitalised on errors that were far too simple.”

Relegation Reality

The numbers make for grim reading:

  • Tied with Oviedo for most defeats in the division (12)
  • League’s worst defence having shipped 37 goals
  • Just two points above the relegation zone
  • Averaging roughly one win per month

For a club of Sevilla’s stature, this is beyond embarrassing - it’s turning into a proper dog’s dinner. The inability to learn from mistakes and adapt tactically is leaving fans pulling their hair out.

With each passing week, the question grows louder: does this team have what it takes to avoid the drop? On current evidence, they’re in for a right old battle to maintain their top-flight status.
