Wolves take cheeky dig at £50m Strand Larsen after Palace move

Wolverhampton didn't hold back in their farewell message to Norwegian striker Jorgen Strand Larsen, highlighting his Premier League penalty as his only league goal this season.

Bottom-of-the-table Wolves have delivered a proper dig at departing striker Jorgen Strand Larsen after his £50 million move to Crystal Palace, pointing out his measly Premier League goal return.

The Norwegian’s Premier League struggles

The 25-year-old Norwegian forward became Palace’s record signing in the January window, but Wolves’ farewell statement was anything but warm and fuzzy. The club couldn’t resist pointing out that “only one of Strand Larsen’s six goals this season came in the Premier League: a penalty against Burnley in October.”

Talk about a proper custard pie! Not exactly the sort of send-off you’d expect for a player who’s just earned your club a massive payday.

A tale of two seasons

To be fair to the lad, Wolves did acknowledge his previous contributions, noting his “impressive” debut campaign where he netted 14 goals - “the best debut season in Wolves’ Premier League history.”

Strand Larsen’s career has been a bit of a financial merry-go-round:

  • Sarpsborg to Groningen: €1.1m
  • Groningen to Celta Vigo: €15.04m
  • Celta to Wolves: €27m
  • Wolves to Palace: €49.7m (£50m)

That’s nearly €100 million in transfer fees for a player who’s now moved four times since 2020. The bloke’s agent must be absolutely laughing all the way to the bank!

Fresh start at Selhurst Park

After managing 20 goals and seven assists in 64 appearances for Wolves, the Norwegian will be hoping to find his shooting boots at Selhurst Park. Palace have splashed the cash on him becoming their record signing, so the pressure’s on for him to deliver more than just the odd penalty.

Meanwhile, Wolves continue their battle against relegation, currently propping up the Premier League table. Perhaps they’re hoping that £50 million might help them find someone who can score more than one league goal in half a season.
