Birma's the name: Getafe's Serbian signing ready to tear up La Liga

Getafe's winter signing Veljko Birmančević introduces himself to Spanish football, promising intensity, goals and a perfect fit for Bordalás' system.

The Serbian attacker who joined Getafe in the January window is fully recovered from injury and raring to make his mark in Spanish football.

Just call me Birma

Getafe’s latest signing has given Spanish journalists an easy way out of pronunciation challenges, telling the press: “You can call me Birma, since Birmančević is a bit difficult to pronounce.”

The new number 20 confirmed he’s put his recent fitness troubles behind him and is ready for action: “I had some physical problems, but I sorted them three weeks ago. I’m fully recovered and ready for the next match.”

Playing style perfect for Bordalás

Birma describes himself as an intense, box-to-box player with specific attributes that should suit Getafe’s system down to the ground:

  • Loves playing with high intensity
  • Specializes in finding spaces behind defensive lines
  • Focuses on goals and assists
  • Brings a fighting mentality to every match

“My greatest virtue is finding spaces behind defences to create difficulties for centre-backs,” he explained, in what will be music to the ears of Getafe supporters.

La Liga dream and Bordalás knowledge

The Serbian revealed he’s been a long-time follower of Spanish football and was well aware of Getafe’s playing style before joining:

“I already knew the coach because I’ve followed La Liga for many years. I knew how Getafe played: with great discipline and being a very compact team.”

Birma also chatted with compatriot Nemanja Maksimović about his new gaffer, adding: “I know exactly what he expects from me and understand the basic concepts of his methodology.”

The move came together rapidly on deadline day, but Birma wasn’t about to let the opportunity slip. “My dream has always been to play in La Liga,” he admitted. “This is a big step forward in my professional career.”

Promise to supporters

Getafe fans will appreciate the Serbian’s commitment to grafting for the team - something that’s bread and butter in the Bordalás system.

“I always give one hundred percent, as well as contributing my individual qualities like scoring and assisting,” he promised. “I have that fighting mentality in my blood.”

With that attitude, he’s certainly not going to be a right Barney Rubble in the dressing room, is he?
