Deportivo's away form driving promotion charge

Hidalgo's men proving to be road warriors with 24 points away from Riazor compared to just 16 at home, as they push for a return to La Liga.

Deportivo La Coruña are showing their best version on the road, establishing themselves as serious promotion contenders largely thanks to their exceptional away form.

Road warriors

The numbers tell a fascinating story for Antonio Hidalgo’s side:

  • 24 points collected from 39 possible away from home (7 wins)
  • Just 16 points from 33 available at Riazor (4 wins)
  • Impressive away victories at Granada, Zaragoza, Almería and more
  • Only three defeats on their travels (Málaga, Santander and Andorra)

This +8 point differential between away and home form is unique in the division, exceeding even Cultural (+7) and Leganés (+5), who also perform better on the road.

Counter-attack specialists

Deportivo’s squad seems built for transition rather than possession dominance, which explains their comfort away from the pressure cooker of Riazor.

With rapid wide players like Mella and Yeremay, plus counter-attacking specialists Luismi Cruz and Stoichkov, they’ve become the nightmare away team that can punish spaces behind pressing opponents.

As Yeremay himself puts it, the team feels “comfortable when not carrying the weight of the match” - a telling insight into their tactical identity.

Home improvement needed

Despite their away day heroics, there’s recognition within the club that promotion will require better results at Riazor. Teams arriving with low blocks have caused problems for Deportivo at home.

In previous seasons, dropped points at home have derailed their promotion hopes, and Hidalgo is adamant about addressing this issue, stating that winning regularly at home “before our people” remains a clear objective.

If they can sort their home form while maintaining their brilliant away record, Deportivo might soon find themselves back in the top flight where many feel they belong.
