LaLiga's transfer market woes continue as Premier League outspends by 6-to-1 margin
Spanish clubs spent just €75.3m in the winter window, placing them last among Europe's 'big five' leagues despite doubling last year's outlay.
Spanish football’s financial struggles continue as LaLiga finishes dead last among Europe’s ‘top five’ leagues in winter transfer spending for the third consecutive season.
Premier League dominance continues
The numbers are proper shocking when you look at them. Spanish clubs managed to scrape together just €75.3 million for new signings this winter - a figure that’s absolutely dwarfed by the Premier League’s massive €453.17 million outlay. That’s nearly a six-fold difference between the two leagues!
While LaLiga did more than double its spending compared to last winter (€32.84m), it still trails all major European competitions:
- Premier League: €453.17m
- Serie A: Significantly higher than LaLiga
- Bundesliga: Outspent Spanish clubs
- Ligue 1: Even France’s top division invested more
Historical context paints a bleak picture
This isn’t just a one-off bad window. Looking at the last decade, Spanish football’s spending power has taken a right battering:
- LaLiga has spent less than all four rival leagues for three consecutive seasons
- Negative spending balance versus the Premier League for TEN straight seasons
- Only outspent Serie A twice in the last decade (2022-23 and 2017-18)
- Managed to outspend Bundesliga and Ligue 1 just three times (2019-20, 2018-19, 2017-18)
The current €75.3m is miles away from LaLiga’s better days, when clubs splashed €288.7m (2017-18), €162.13m (2019-20) and €114.15m (2018-19).
Some positive news on player sales
It’s not all doom and gloom for the Spanish bread and butter. For the first time in six seasons, LaLiga clubs have generated over €100 million from player sales. This actually puts them ahead of both Bundesliga and Ligue 1 in terms of income generated.
Still, this pales in comparison to the 2017-18 winter window, when Spanish clubs raked in a whopping €215.08m - second only to the Premier League that season.
Half of LaLiga clubs kept their powder dry
While Atlético Madrid went on a bit of a shopping spree bringing in Lookman and others, nine of the twenty LaLiga clubs didn’t spend a single penny on transfer fees this winter. Most notably, the league’s current top two - Barcelona and Real Madrid - kept their chequebooks firmly in their pockets.
Meanwhile, across in England, Manchester City alone splashed €95 million on five players - more than the entire Spanish top flight combined. The state of it!
