Sevilla's Castrín setback as Almeyda prepares for Girona test
Sevilla face mounting injury concerns ahead of their La Liga clash with Girona, with defender Andrés Castrín joining an expanding treatment room at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.
Sevilla’s preparation for their upcoming clash against high-flying Girona has hit a snag with defender Andrés Castrín ruled out through injury, adding to Matías Almeyda’s growing list of absentees.
Injury Troubles Mount
The Nervionenses completed their second training session of the week on Wednesday without Castrín, who’s suffering from a quadriceps contusion in his right leg. The club’s medical services revealed the injury stemmed from “a knock during Sunday’s session” before the Mallorca trip, with his condition worsening in recent hours.
Castrín joins a treatment room that’s getting busier than Piccadilly Circus at rush hour, with several key players already sidelined:
- Marcao remains out indefinitely after surgery on the scaphoid bone in his left foot
- Adnan Januzaj continues rehabilitation for right hamstring problems
- Rubén Vargas is nursing a left biceps femoris injury and isn’t expected back for a month
Boost for the Gaffer
It’s not all doom and gloom for Almeyda, though. Captain Nemanja Gudelj will return after serving his suspension during the painful defeat at Mallorca last time out. The Serbian’s presence should provide some much-needed steel in midfield against a Girona side that’s been the dog’s dinner this season.
New Boy Ready
In more positive news, new signing Neal Maupay will be officially unveiled as a Sevilla player today at 1:00 PM in the José Antonio Sánchez Araujo Press Room at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium. The French forward arrives at a crucial time with the squad looking thin on the ground.
Looking Ahead
Sevilla have two more training sessions scheduled this week before hosting Girona on Saturday at 6:30 PM in matchday 23 of La Liga. Almeyda will address the media in his pre-match press conference on Friday at 12:30 PM, where he’ll likely provide further updates on his squad’s fitness situation.
After their recent disappointment in Mallorca, the Andalusians will be desperate to bounce back against Michel’s high-achieving Girona side, who’ve been one of the surprise packages of the season.
