Zubimendi dismisses Madrid links: 'They have more than enough players'

Arsenal's Spanish midfielder plays down Real Madrid transfer rumours while discussing teammate Merino's injury concerns and the Gunners' Champions League ambitions.

Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi has poured cold water on speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid, insisting the Spanish giants are already well-stocked in midfield.

Despite persistent rumours suggesting Zubimendi could be the missing piece in Madrid’s midfield puzzle, the Spanish international doesn’t see himself as the answer to any perceived problems at the Bernabéu.

Speaking on ‘El Larguero’ after Arsenal’s 1-0 Carabao Cup semi-final victory over Chelsea, Zubimendi was crystal clear about the situation:

“No, I don’t think so. Real Madrid have more than enough players to do well.”

The comments came fresh off the back of Arsenal booking their place in the Carabao Cup final thanks to Kai Havertz’s late winner against their London rivals.

Concern for injured Merino

Zubimendi also addressed the injury situation of his compatriot and Arsenal teammate Mikel Merino, whose fitness issues could potentially impact his availability for next summer’s World Cup:

  • Described Merino as “very professional” who “always thinks about what’s best for the club”
  • Admitted the injury has significantly impacted Arsenal
  • Suggested Merino is putting on a brave face publicly but may be struggling privately
  • Expressed hope Merino will recover in time for international duty

Champions League ambitions

When questioned about Arsenal’s prospects in this season’s Champions League after topping their group in the league phase, Zubimendi remained cautiously optimistic:

“It’s about winning it. The classification is very good, but let’s see who wins it,” he stated pragmatically.

The midfielder acknowledged his positive adaptation to English football but noted the demanding nature of matches and high level of competition throughout the league.

He also warned against underestimating Spanish clubs in European competition, specifically mentioning Barcelona’s semi-final appearance last season, Real Madrid’s pedigree, and Atletico Madrid’s quality squad.

“The Champions League is different and anything can happen,” Zubimendi concluded, showing the kind of level-headed approach that’s made him a proper diamond in Arsenal’s midfield this season.
