Betis fan nicked after Cartuja Stadium punch-up leaves victim with facial fractures
Police have arrested the suspect behind a violent attack at a Real Betis match at La Cartuja Stadium that left a spectator with serious facial injuries.
Spanish police have detained a man suspected of violently assaulting another spectator during a Real Betis match at Seville’s La Cartuja Stadium, leaving the victim with serious facial fractures.
Violent scenes mar Betis fixture
What should have been a normal day at the football has turned proper nasty for one unfortunate Betis supporter. During an unspecified La Liga match this season at the Cartuja Stadium, a bloke in the stands was on the receiving end of a brutal attack that left him with serious facial injuries.
According to the Andalusian police statement released Thursday, the incident kicked off during the match when “one spectator was suddenly assaulted by another attendee, receiving a strong blow to the face” following some action in the game. The poor sod ended up with multiple facial fractures - not exactly the souvenir you want from a day out watching the Verdiblancos.
Social media spread led to arrest
In this day and age, nothing stays private for long, does it? Several witnesses caught the whole sorry episode on their phones, and before you knew it, the footage was doing the rounds on social media and news outlets across Spain. Bit of a nightmare for the perpetrator, as it turns out.
The widespread sharing of the incident actually helped the coppers identify and collar the suspect. The National Police have now charged him with causing serious bodily harm, though they’ve kept schtum about exactly which Betis match triggered the dust-up.
Zero tolerance approach
The police statement makes it crystal clear they’re taking a hard line on this sort of behaviour. They’ve emphasized their “firm commitment to eradicating any manifestation of violence in sports” and are promising “zero tolerance” for any antics that disrupt the peaceful atmosphere at sporting events.
It’s another reminder that Spanish authorities continue to crack down on football violence, which has been a bit of a problem in Spanish football over the years. The powers that be are determined to ensure that a trip to see Betis or any other club doesn’t end with anyone needing a visit to the hospital.
