Giráldez stays upbeat despite Zaragoza departure as Celta close transfer window

Celta Vigo boss Claudio Giráldez remains positive about the club's transfer business despite losing Bryan Zaragoza at the eleventh hour ahead of their clash with Osasuna.

Celta Vigo’s gaffer Claudio Giráldez is putting a brave face on after a transfer window that saw some decent business but ended with Bryan Zaragoza heading for the exit door at the last minute.

Transfer window assessment

Speaking ahead of Friday’s clash with Osasuna, Giráldez took a measured approach when discussing Celta’s January dealings. The true value of their business will only become clear at season’s end, as he acknowledged the adaptation period all new signings require.

“In general terms we have to be optimistic and content with what happened,” Giráldez offered, highlighting several positives from their window:

  • A financially sound performance in the market
  • The arrival of Fer, filling a profile they’d targeted since pre-season
  • Defensive reinforcement with Álvaro Núñez, providing cover at right-back/centre-back
  • Added experience with Matías

The gaffer did note one significant challenge remains - they’re still carrying an oversized squad, which isn’t ideal for man-management.

Zaragoza departure drama

The elephant in the room was Bryan Zaragoza’s departure, which clearly came too late for Celta to secure a replacement. Giráldez was keen to squash any rumours of bad blood between them.

“There were rumours we didn’t get on. Some people said it, I don’t know why,” he explained. “We have a very good relationship, I’m very fond of him.”

Giráldez showed proper class in his response, refusing to slate the player for his decision. Instead, he emphasized the importance of respecting players’ career choices without generating the hatred that’s become all too common in football these days.

“It’s a shame Bryan’s move came so late - we couldn’t bring in someone for that position,” he admitted.

Osasuna challenge

Looking ahead to Friday’s fixture, Giráldez was full of praise for Osasuna and their manager, describing them as one of the most tactically versatile sides in the division.

“They have a very good squad and have strengthened well,” he noted. “Their manager is very chameleon-like, capable of showing a completely different team from one match to the next.”

The Celta boss warned his players they’ll need to be proper switched on against an opponent with so many tactical variations in their locker. Bit of a tough test for the lads after a somewhat turbulent January window.
