Huesca's Martín González bullish after transfer window: 'We'll be more competitive'

SD Huesca sporting director believes winter signings will strengthen squad despite difficult league position, with new arrival Laquintana eager to make impact.

Huesca sporting director Ángel Martín González has expressed confidence that the club’s winter transfer business will help turn their season around, despite their challenging position in the Segunda División.

Transfer window assessment

Speaking at new signing Ignacio Laquintana’s unveiling, Martín González offered an upbeat assessment of Huesca’s January dealings:

“The situation is difficult but there’s plenty of time left. We have sufficient weapons and this transfer window will make us better,” he stated, clearly hoping their business will prove shrewd in the coming months.

The sporting director believes the new additions bring valuable experience to the squad: “Players with more experience and pedigree have arrived. We’ll be more competitive. The squad generates excitement and having so many players won’t be a problem.”

He also took the opportunity to back the club’s full-backs, insisting that “Toni Abad, Carrillo, Julio and Ro aren’t the problem” - a proper vote of confidence for the lads there.

Jair deal that wasn’t

Interestingly, Martín González addressed the failed pursuit of Jair, explaining it “wasn’t our problem” that the deal collapsed. Not one to dwell on what might have been, he quickly highlighted that they’ve secured Joaquín instead, who offers versatility across defence and midfield. Swings and roundabouts, as they say in the trade.

Laquintana eager to impress

New boy Laquintana seemed proper chuffed with his move, telling reporters: “I’m excited to come here. I’m eager to start because I’ve had a normal pre-season and played friendlies. I’m ready.”

The Uruguayan winger described himself as “a fast wide player” and revealed his ultimate ambition of representing his country at the World Cup - something he hopes strong performances for Huesca might help him achieve.

With these fresh faces in the dressing room, Huesca will be hoping they’ve done enough business to climb the table in the second half of the season. Only time will tell if Martín González’s optimism is justified or if it’s all just a load of old cobblers.
