Loren Juarros dodges questions on Málaga future as contract winds down
Málaga's sporting director faces uncertain future with his contract expiring in June, raising eyebrows with comments suggesting he lacks decision-making power.
Málaga’s sporting director Loren Juarros has dropped some serious hints that his time at La Rosaleda might be coming to an end, with his contract set to expire this summer and growing signs that a renewal isn’t on the cards.
Press conference revelations
Juarros fronted up to the media on Monday to chat about Málaga’s January transfer window - which ended without a single new face walking through the door. But what started as a presser about transfer dealings quickly turned into a proper awkward affair about his own future at the club.
The Burgos-born director was surprisingly vague when quizzed about his plans beyond June:
- Claimed his future “isn’t in my hands” despite his previous enthusiasm for the project
- Admitted the club has had hits and misses under his leadership
- Insisted he’s focused on “taking Málaga to the best place possible until the day I’m here”
That last bit sounds like a bloke with one foot out the door if you ask me!
Power struggle hints
Things got even more interesting when the topic shifted to manager Juanfran Funes’ potential contract extension. In what can only be described as a bit of a bobby dazzler moment, Juarros suggested it wasn’t even his decision to make:
“Málaga needs to think of him as a manager for the future. Managers are fundamental, and while players get lots of protection, the figure of the coach is also key for the club’s future.”
Reading between the lines
This raised more than a few eyebrows among the assembled hacks, considering that handling manager contracts is literally bread and butter for any sporting director worth their salt.
When pressed further, Juarros dropped an even bigger clue about his diminishing influence:
- Stated he’d renew Funes “without hesitation” if given the authority
- Suggested the club should handle such matters since he has “no guarantees” about his own future
- Reminded everyone he arrived during “a very complicated situation” and had to make tough decisions
All this points to a sporting director who’s either being frozen out of key decisions or is already mentally checking train times back to Burgos. Either way, the Segunda División side appears to have some serious boardroom politics bubbling away behind the scenes.
