The Vuskovic phenomenon: How the Spurs loanee is tearing up the Bundesliga

Croatian centre-back Luka Vuskovic is making waves in Germany with Hamburg, earning rave reviews from Rakitic and Matthäus while Bayern Munich stars take notice.

Hamburg’s impressive 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich has cemented Luka Vuskovic as one of the Bundesliga’s breakout stars this season, with football legends already tipping him for greatness.

The Croatian colossus

On loan from Tottenham Hotspur, the 18-year-old Croatian defender has been nothing short of sensational since arriving in Hamburg. After notching seven goals and three assists during his previous loan spell at Westerlo, Vuskovic has continued his remarkable form in Germany’s top flight with four goals in just 17 appearances.

His performance against Bayern was particularly eye-catching. Wearing the number 44 shirt (inherited from his brother Mario who is currently suspended for doping violations), Vuskovic not only scored the equaliser with a brilliant header past Alphonso Davies in the 53rd minute but also led his team defensively:

  • Made more shots (2) than any other Hamburg player - despite playing at centre-back
  • Completed a match-high 7 clearances
  • Currently ranks as the third-best aerial duelist across Europe’s top five leagues (4.62 duels won per 90)
  • Second in the Bundesliga for total clearances (145)

Such has been his impact that the Bundesliga has included him in an exclusive Playmobil collection alongside stars like Harry Kane.

High praise from football royalty

Fellow Croatian Ivan Rakitic hasn’t held back in his assessment: “Toda Europa habla de él ahora mismo,” noting that Bayern should do everything possible to sign him.

Even more telling is Lothar Matthäus’s evaluation: “He’s 18 years old but plays as if he’s already featured in three World Cups. Even at 30, I couldn’t see what he sees. He’s a very intelligent player.”

Bayern’s own Jonathan Tah has also been impressed: “He’s very good for his age. I like the energy he brings to the pitch, his confidence. It’s something I pay a lot of attention to.”

What next for the wonderkid?

Hamburg had hoped to extend his loan for another season at the Volksparkstadion, but that ship has sailed - Vuskovic has entered a new dimension in his career trajectory.

With his dominant aerial presence, goal-scoring ability (including a scorpion kick against Werder Bremen that’s a Goal of the Season contender), and maturity beyond his years, the Spurs loanee looks destined for the absolute top drawer.

Whether Tottenham can keep hold of their diamond after the summer remains one of the most intriguing questions in European football. As Rakitic suggests, he might already be ready for one of the continent’s elite clubs - and there are only four or five of those in Europe.
