Almeyda dodges Sergio Ramos questions: 'Don't give me another headache'
Sevilla manager Matías Almeyda refuses to be drawn into speculation about Sergio Ramos' potential return, following Antonio Cordón's earlier dismissal of free agent signings.
Matías Almeyda has made it crystal clear he’s not getting involved in the Sergio Ramos saga at Sevilla, pleading with journalists to stop adding to his worries during today’s press conference.
‘Don’t be cruel’
When asked about the possibility of bringing the legendary defender back to the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, Almeyda was having none of it:
“Don’t give me another headache, don’t be cruel,” the Argentine manager implored, skillfully sidestepping the question while showing respect for both Ramos and his current squad.
The Sevilla boss emphasized his focus remains solely on the players already at his disposal, refusing to entertain speculation about potential free agent signings – particularly one as high-profile as the former Real Madrid captain.
Financial reality bites
This follows Sporting Director Antonio Cordón’s comments on Wednesday during Neal Maupay’s presentation, where he effectively ruled out any free agent signings due to the club’s dire financial situation.
Cordón didn’t mince his words about Sevilla’s current economic reality:
- The club has virtually no money left for new signings
- The remaining budget is “laughable” compared to modern footballer wages
- Many clubs are facing similar financial constraints
- The focus must be on strengthening from within
The sporting director even used a telling metaphor, comparing pursuing Ramos to “looking at a car when you don’t have money to buy it” – a brutal assessment of Sevilla’s current spending power.
Almeyda and Ramos: What might have been
Interestingly, Almeyda reportedly came close to managing Ramos at Monterrey for the 2025 Apertura tournament, but ultimately chose Sevilla’s offer instead.
For now, the future of the 38-year-old defender remains uncertain, with Almeyda clearly determined not to let speculation disrupt his current squad as they navigate a challenging season.
The Ramos saga continues to bubble away in the background, but Sevilla’s brass seem increasingly adamant that financial realities will prevent any fairytale reunion with their academy product – no matter how appealing it might be to the Nervión faithful.
