Bryan Zaragoza's wild journey: From Granada hero to Roma with World Cup dreams

The Spanish winger's career has taken more twists than the Northern Line - from Granada breakthrough to Bayern misadventure and now seeking redemption in Rome.

A lightning-quick Spanish winger with favela-style flair who’s gone from stunning Barcelona to falling out with Thomas Tuchel in just over a year. Bryan Zaragoza’s career trajectory has been anything but predictable.

Granada breakthrough and Spain call-up

The Málaga-born talent first caught the eye helping Granada return to La Liga in 2023, but it was his October brace against Barcelona that truly announced him to the world. Just days later, Luis de la Fuente handed him a Spain debut against Scotland.

His raw talent prompted Bayern Munich to swoop early, announcing his signing in December 2023. The original plan was for Zaragoza to remain at Granada until season’s end, but Kingsley Coman’s injury accelerated his German adventure.

Lost in translation in Munich

Things quickly went pear-shaped in Bavaria. Tuchel barely used the Spaniard, giving him just 171 minutes of playing time while citing language barriers as the issue. Zaragoza’s response after later scoring for Spain was telling: “Football is played with feet, not with language.”

Despite initially insisting he wanted to succeed at Bayern, having “signed for five and a half years,” a loan move to Osasuna materialised. In Pamplona, injuries disrupted his rhythm, though he still managed a goal and six assists across 28 appearances.

Celta chapter and surprise exit

This season’s loan to Celta Vigo started slowly but gathered momentum. Just as he was becoming integral to Claudio Giráldez’s plans, his departure caught many off guard.

Celta’s Football Director Marco Garcés explained the complicated three-club deal was financially beneficial for the Galicians, who received €2 million compensation while avoiding a potential €12 million purchase option.

Zaragoza himself was sentimental about his brief Vigo stint: “Some will say it was just six meaningless months, but for me, they were unique. The EuroCelta nights at Balaídos, walking out to ‘Oliveira dos cen anos’, winning at the Bernabéu…”

Roma redemption and World Cup ambitions

Now the 22-year-old heads to Roma on another loan with purchase option. Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund made it clear what’s at stake: the 2026 World Cup remains “his great objective.”

Meanwhile, Zaragoza is buzzing to get started in Serie A: “I’m very happy to join a historic club like Roma. I’m eager to learn everything about the team, its fans, the city, but above all, to show my qualities.”

For a player whose career has already seen more plot twists than an EastEnders Christmas special, the Italian capital offers a fresh chance to fulfill his undoubted potential.
