Celta and Osasuna teetering on the edge in crucial mid-table clash

Two sides with contrasting ambitions meet at Balaídos, with Celta eyeing European spots while Osasuna look to escape the relegation dogfight.

A fascinating encounter awaits at Balaídos as Celta Vigo aim to continue their European push against an Osasuna side desperate to pull away from the relegation scrap.

La Liga’s three-tier system

La Liga has developed a distinct three-tier structure this season. The top four Champions League spots seem all but sewn up, while a second group of teams - with Celta bringing up the rear - are more focused on European qualification than looking over their shoulders. Below them, it’s proper drama, with Osasuna caught in the relegation mixer.

Celta’s European dreams

Claudio Giráldez’s men have a golden opportunity tonight - win and they’ll be kipping in the European spots, at least temporarily. The Galicians are looking to maintain their impressive home form, and they’ve got a couple of interesting subplots to boot:

  • New signing Matías Vecino could make his debut
  • Fer López returns in front of the home crowd
  • Hugo Sotelo, Cervi and Aidoo have been left out (manager’s decision)
  • Recent acquisition Álvaro Núñez is out with a groin problem

Osasuna finding form

Things are looking up for Alessio Lisci’s rojillos:

  • Recently secured their first away league win at Rayo Vallecas
  • Currently on a three-match unbeaten run
  • Clear signs the team is finding its rhythm

However, they’ll be missing two key players for the trip to Vigo - Torró (suspended after accumulating too many bookings) and Moncayola (sidelined with respiratory issues).

Battle of the box merchants

The game features two proper goal-getters who love nothing more than getting on the end of crosses. Between them, Borja Iglesias and Ante Budimir have bagged 18 goals in La Liga this season.

Budimir is absolutely on fire, with four goals in his last three matches, and arrives at Balaídos determined to help his team climb the table. Meanwhile, Borja is eager to find the onion bag in front of his own supporters.

What to expect

Osasuna are at that crucial juncture where a positive result could give them some breathing space from the relegation battle. With Celta not exactly in sparkling form, Lisci’s men might fancy their chances of nicking a point or three.

It could be a proper game of two halves, with both sides having their moments. Don’t be surprised if we see goals - and plenty of ‘em.
