Ceuta-Córdoba clash postponed as Storm Leonardo wreaks havoc

Córdoba's weekend trip to Ceuta has been called off due to extreme weather conditions in Andalusia, with both clubs now seeking a new date for the fixture.

The Segunda División match between Ceuta and Córdoba scheduled for Sunday at 16:15 has been officially postponed due to the severe weather conditions caused by Storm Leonardo battering southern Spain.

Weather chaos forces fixture change

Córdoba manager Iván Ania revealed during his regular Friday press conference that the club had requested a postponement, citing safety concerns: “The extraordinary situation we’re experiencing in Andalusia means we cannot guarantee the expedition’s arrival in Ceuta.”

The club later released an official statement highlighting the “extraordinary meteorological situation” affecting Andalusia, with orange weather warnings issued across the region. These conditions made it impossible to “guarantee travel in optimal safety conditions” for either the team or their supporters.

Travel nightmares

Córdoba’s original travel plans involved taking a ferry from Algeciras to Ceuta on Saturday afternoon. However, the port in the autonomous city has been repeatedly closed due to the successive storms Leonardo and now Marta, which is approaching the region.

The club considered alternative arrangements, including:

  • Flying to Tetuán (Morocco)
  • Finding other transport options

However, there were no guarantees these alternatives wouldn’t also face cancellation given the deteriorating weather forecast.

Learning from past mistakes

The Blanquiverdes were particularly keen to avoid a repeat of last season’s fiasco in Almería, where the team travelled only to find their match at Almería Stadium cancelled due to a red weather warning in the western part of Andalusia.

By Friday afternoon, both clubs and match officials received the official notification that the game would be postponed, with authorities unwilling to risk anyone’s physical safety in the Adam and Eve of this weather crisis.

The two clubs will now hold discussions to agree on a new date for the fixture.
