Hernández eyes statement victory as high-flying Castellón welcome struggling Valladolid

Castellón manager Pablo Hernández believes Sunday's clash against Real Valladolid could propel his surprise package side to the top of Spain's Segunda División.

Castellón’s remarkable transformation from early-season strugglers to promotion contenders faces its next test as they prepare to host former La Liga side Real Valladolid on Sunday afternoon.

From zeros to heroes

The albinegros have been the dog’s dinner this season, rising from the lower reaches of the table to second place with 42 points – just two behind leaders Racing Santander. Manager Pablo Hernández believes victory this weekend could represent a defining moment in their campaign.

“It could be a good moment to make a statement,” Hernández suggested, with his side potentially ending the weekend at the summit of Spain’s second tier.

Attacking philosophy

Castellón’s success has been built on their front-foot approach, with Hernández praising his players for stepping up and embracing his attacking principles:

  • Team generates numerous chances
  • Commits significant numbers forward
  • Players have “taken a step forward” according to the boss

Valladolid warning

Despite facing opponents struggling in the table after relegation from La Liga last season, Hernández is wary of the threat posed by Real Valladolid:

“We’re going to face an opponent that will make things very difficult for us. Physically they have very good metrics, their players are capable of repeating many high-intensity efforts and they’re going to demand a lot from us.”

Selection headaches

Castellón will be without suspended duo Jérémy Mellot and Fabrizio Brignani for Sunday’s 14:00 kickoff. While Agustín Sienra is set to replace Brignani in central defence, the right-back position remains uncertain.

Salva Ruiz playing on his weaker side is one option being considered by the ‘orellut’ coach, though Hernández kept his cards close to his chest: “I know who will play but I’m not going to say. There are several options and we have to choose one.”

The manager expressed confidence that whoever fills the void will be “up to the challenge” as Castellón look to continue their impressive campaign against a Valladolid side desperate for points.
