Matarazzo riding the wave: 'We want to continue this run of success'

Real Sociedad boss eyes European push as injury concerns linger ahead of Elche clash, with key players Barrenetxea and Zakharyan still sidelined.

Real Sociedad gaffer Pellegrino Matarazzo is keen to keep the good times rolling as his in-form side prepare to face Elche, with a win potentially catapulting La Real firmly into the European conversation.

Injury Concerns

The American-born boss delivered a somewhat frustrating update on star winger Barrenetxea, who’ll miss his third consecutive match:

“I wish I could give you more information, but he’s lacking certain mobility at the muscular level,” Matarazzo explained, hoping the youngster might return to training next week, though that’s not set in stone.

Russian talent Zakharyan is also working his way back, with Matarazzo confirming he’ll begin field training next week, potentially eyeing a return against Real Madrid, though not in time for the upcoming Copa clash.

There’s better news regarding Óskarsson and Wesley, who are available but not quite ready for starting roles. The gaffer reckons a player needs to be capable of “60 minutes at full throttle” before earning a spot in the starting XI.

Elche Challenge

Despite their opponents’ lowly league position, Matarazzo isn’t taking anything for granted, praising Eder Sarabia’s side for their offensive approach and possession-based style.

“They’re an offensive team that looks to maintain possession,” he noted, highlighting their positional rotations that make them difficult to defend against.

The quick turnaround from their Copa del Rey victory at Mendizorroza means rotation is likely, with “possibly a couple” of changes to ensure La Real have enough energy to cover ground against a tricky opponent.

Riding the Wave

When asked about potentially cementing their European credentials with a win, Matarazzo remained focused on the short-term while acknowledging the momentum building at the Reale Arena.

“We go game by game, but we want to take advantage of this moment and continue on this wave of success we’re on and see where it takes us,” he said, embodying the cautious optimism currently flowing through San Sebastián.

With the massive Copa del Rey clash against Athletic Club on the horizon, there might have been concerns about focus, but Matarazzo insists both players and supporters will be fully concentrated on the task at hand against Elche.

If La Real can maintain their current form, they might just find themselves in the mixer for European spots – not too shabby for a side that’s had its fair share of ups and downs this season. The gaffer’s bread and butter right now is making sure they don’t take their eye off the ball against what could be a potential banana skin.
