Arbeloa slams 'biggest scandal in Spanish football history' amid Negreira case frustration

Real Madrid's Arbeloa doesn't hold back on the unresolved Negreira case ahead of Valencia clash, with his squad depleted by injuries and suspensions.

Madrid coach voices what many are thinking as football corruption investigation drags on without resolution.

Mestalla return looms amid squad challenges

Real Madrid are set to return to the Mestalla cauldron this weekend, but they’ll be doing it with one arm tied behind their back. Álvaro Arbeloa faces his first proper test as interim boss with a severely depleted squad - no Vinicius (suspended), while Bellingham, Militão and Rodrygo all watching from the treatment room.

The former defender acknowledged the traditional difficulty of the fixture: “Visits to Mestalla are always complicated. For all teams, beating Real Madrid is a massive challenge during the year.”

The elephant in the room

While much of Arbeloa’s press conference covered expected topics like squad rotation and fitness planning, it was his comments on the ongoing ‘Caso Negreira’ investigation that raised eyebrows.

When asked about the Barcelona referee payment scandal and their withdrawal from the Super League project, Arbeloa didn’t mince his words:

“Nobody understands why the biggest scandal in Spanish football history remains unresolved. And that goes for everyone.”

The blunt assessment reflects growing frustration across Spanish football that the investigation into Barcelona’s payments to former referee committee vice-president José María Enríquez Negreira has dragged on without conclusion.

Squad management and planning

Arbeloa defended his decision to give players two days off, explaining that Antonio Pintus (Madrid’s fitness guru) plays a crucial role in these decisions, with planning designed to ensure players arrive in optimal condition during a congested fixture period.

On the bright side, Arbeloa spoke positively about young talent Mastantuono, praising his dribbling ability and intensity, while also highlighting Brahim Díaz’s technical qualities between the lines.

Regarding Rodrygo’s recent social media mishap, Arbeloa was diplomatic: “He made a statement and he made a mistake. Now we need to get him back in the best possible condition. We need Rodrygo and his contributions.”

With the squad stretched thin, Sunday’s trip to Valencia will provide a serious examination of Arbeloa’s tactical nous as Madrid look to maintain their title charge despite their injury crisis.
