Barcelona's Juan Hernández commits to 2028 as Flick's youth revolution continues

The 18-year-old Aragonese midfielder extends his Barcelona contract until 2028 with an option for an additional year, marking him as one of Hansi Flick's chosen talents.

Barcelona continue their commitment to La Masia talent with another promising youngster secured for the long-term future

Barcelona’s faith in their youth system shows no signs of slowing down as the Catalan giants have tied down another bright prospect. Juan Hernández, an 18-year-old midfielder who’s caught Hansi Flick’s eye, has put pen to paper on a deal keeping him at the club until 2028, with an option for an additional year.

Rising through the ranks

The Aragonese midfielder has been on a rapid trajectory since joining Barcelona’s Infantil A from Real Zaragoza’s youth setup in summer 2020. While still technically in his youth team years, Hernández has already established himself within the Barça Atlètic setup.

His journey with the reserve side began in August 2023 against Real Unión, making eight appearances that season with two starts. This campaign has seen him become a proper mainstay in Juliano Belletti’s team:

  • 20 matches played (18 as starter)
  • 4 goals scored
  • 4 assists provided

Before his permanent promotion to Barça Atlètic in January, Hernández played a crucial role in the Juvenil A team’s impressive treble-winning season.

Flick’s watchful eye

The German gaffer clearly rates the youngster, having invited him to train with the first team on numerous occasions. Hernández has already made several matchday squads without yet making his senior debut:

  • Called up for La Liga matches against Girona and Oviedo
  • Named in Champions League squads against Olympiacos and Slavia Prague

The attacking midfielder, born in Teruel, represents another example of Barcelona’s continued dedication to developing homegrown talent. With Flick seemingly keen to integrate youth players who show promise, Hernández’s new contract suggests the club views him as a potential first-team contributor in the coming seasons.

This renewal is proper shrewd business from Barcelona, who continue building for the future despite their well-documented financial constraints. As they say in the East End, they’re using their loaf by securing top talent early doors.
