Corberán refuses to buy into Madrid's managerial wobbles ahead of Mestalla clash

Valencia boss Carlos Corberán dismisses notion that Real Madrid might be vulnerable under Arbeloa as his side prepares for crucial home fixture against the champions.

Valencia gaffer Carlos Corberán isn’t having any of the chat about Real Madrid being vulnerable under new management as his side prepares for Sunday’s massive clash at Mestalla.

Respecting the champions

With Los Blancos undergoing a transition following Álvaro Arbeloa’s appointment, some might fancy Valencia’s chances of nicking a result. But Corberán was crystal clear about the threat posed by the visitors, regardless of who’s in the dugout.

“We’ll never doubt Real Madrid’s level on the pitch, regardless of how long a manager has been there,” the Valencia boss insisted, showing proper respect for the Spanish giants despite their recent wobbles.

The Mestalla men are looking to extend their six-match unbeaten run at home (two wins, four draws) and create some breathing space from the relegation zone, where they currently sit just one point above the drop.

Tactical awareness

Corberán has clearly been doing his homework on Arbeloa’s Madrid, noting subtle differences from the previous regime:

  • Maintained their counter-attacking threat and pace in transition
  • Introduced a more structured defensive shape when in their own half
  • Different defensive organization while maintaining their core identity

The Valencia manager acknowledged Madrid’s quality regardless of absences, noting that “whoever plays is practically as good as whoever doesn’t play” - proper football speak for “they’ve got depth for days”.

Pressure? What pressure?

Despite Valencia’s precarious league position, Corberán was having none of the pressure talk, preferring to frame it as “responsibility” rather than pressure. The gaffer expressed appreciation for the public backing he received from football CEO Ron Gourlay this week.

“I’ve felt tremendous support from day one and I respond with dedication, demand, passion, dedication and enthusiasm,” said Corberán, who’s clearly not ready to throw in the towel despite being asked directly if he might consider his position if results don’t improve.

When questioned about potentially stepping down, he kept his powder dry: “I can’t answer that question. I’m focused on the match ahead and how to prepare for it.”

Injury updates

Rubén Iranzo remains the only confirmed absentee for Sunday’s fixture, with Corberán awaiting test results to determine the severity of his issue. Meanwhile, Dimitri Foulquier is carrying a knock but remains the only available right-back option.

The Valencia faithful will be hoping their team can make Mestalla a fortress once again on Sunday night, with kick-off set for 21:00 local time.
