Elche's nightmare run continues as relegation fears grow
Three consecutive defeats have alarm bells ringing at Martínez Valero as Elche's promising season threatens to unravel with the team now just two points above the drop zone.
Elche’s season is going pear-shaped at an alarming rate, with Eder Sarabia’s men now winless in 2026 and sliding dangerously close to the relegation scrap after their latest defeat to Real Sociedad.
Freefall form
The 3-1 loss at Anoeta marks Elche’s third consecutive defeat, each time shipping three goals. It’s the first time this campaign they’ve lost three on the bounce, and the numbers make for grim reading:
- Zero wins in 2026 so far
- Just 2 points collected from a possible 18
- A shocking 15 goals conceded in this period
What makes this collapse particularly painful is how it’s transformed their season narrative. Before this horror run, they were comfortably looking at survival and even harboring ambitions of a top-half finish. Now? They’re looking nervously over their shoulders.
Away day blues
Elche’s travel sickness continues to be a massive Achilles heel. They remain without a single away victory after eleven road trips, mustering a measly four points from 33 available. That’s the worst away record in the entire division – proper dog’s dinner stuff.
Their early-season success was built on fortress Martínez Valero, where they were among La Liga’s strongest home performers. But even that reliable foundation has crumbled recently, with their unbeaten home record gone and no wins in their last three in front of their own fans.
Mitigating factors
To be fair to Sarabia, injuries and January departures haven’t helped their cause. Top scorer Rafa Mir missed the Sociedad clash through injury, while they’ve lost key players Álvaro Núñez and Rodrigo Mendoza in the winter window. New signings Lucas Cepeda and Gonzalo Villar only featured as late substitutes at Anoeta.
Relegation reality
Elche currently sit 13th – though results elsewhere could see them drop lower – and maintain just a two-point cushion above the relegation places. That gap comes with an asterisk too, as Rayo Vallecano (18th) have a game in hand after their match against Real Oviedo was postponed.
Ironically, Rayo were the last team Elche managed to beat, thrashing them 4-0 to end 2025 on a high. How quickly things change in football – from cloud nine to brown bread territory in just six matchdays.
Sarabia will hope for a reaction when they host Osasuna next Friday at Martínez Valero, though they’ll be without the suspended Affengruber who picked up one booking too many.
