Last-gasp Guirassy strike puts Dortmund hot on Bayern's heels
Borussia Dortmund close the gap to just three points behind Bayern Munich with dramatic late win at Wolfsburg, keeping their Bundesliga title hopes alive.
Dortmund have officially thrown their hat into the Bundesliga title race with a dramatic late winner against Wolfsburg that puts them just three points behind Bayern Munich.
Drama at the death
Serhou Guirassy proved to be the hero for the Black and Yellows, netting in the 87th minute to secure a 1-2 away victory that might just have the Bayern suits looking nervously over their shoulders. Fair play to Dortmund, they’ve shown proper bottle here to stay in the hunt.
Though it’s worth noting the Bavarian giants do have a game in hand, this result means only three points separate the two German heavyweights with 13 matchdays remaining. Game on, as they say!
First half fortune
Dortmund were knocking on the door early doors when Ryerson teed up Beier, whose effort cannoned off the woodwork after a deflection from Vavro.
They didn’t have to wait long though, as Julian Brandt nodded home from Ryerson’s corner shortly after, notching his sixth Bundesliga goal of the season with a neat near-post finish.
Jobe Bellingham, younger brother of you-know-who, nearly doubled the advantage before the break with a strike from the edge of the box, but Grabara managed to palm it away.
Wolfsburg fight back
The second half was a different kettle of fish entirely. Wolfsburg came out all guns blazing and levelled in the 52nd minute through Konstantinos Koulierakis, who powered home a header from Arnold’s free-kick.
In truth, the Volkswagen outfit were the better side after the break and should’ve gone ahead. Kobel pulled off a crucial one-on-one save from Amoura, while Majer was denied by the crossbar with a looping header that had the Dortmund faithful holding their breath.
Late drama
Just when it looked like points would be shared, Felix Nmecha sparked the decisive move in the 87th minute. The midfielder linked up brilliantly with Fábio Silva, who squared it for Guirassy to slot past Grabara and send the away end into raptures.
The result leaves Bayern on 51 points with Dortmund breathing down their necks on 48. The title race is well and truly on in Germany, and I for one am absolutely loving it.
