Sevilla request Girona clash postponement amid severe weather warnings

The Nervión club has informed La Liga they'd prefer not to play today's fixture due to orange weather alerts in Seville as Storm Marta batters southern Spain.

Severe weather conditions threatening Andalusia have prompted Sevilla to ask La Liga for a postponement of today’s scheduled 18:30 match against Girona.

Storm chaos hits southern Spain

After the devastation of Storm Leonardo, which forced more than 11,000 people to evacuate their homes across Andalusia, Storm Marta has now arrived to deliver another proper drenching to the region. The situation’s turned right serious in Seville, with local authorities raising the Emergency Territorial Plan to Level 1 early this morning.

Francisco Toscano, the Government’s sub-delegate in Seville, has warned that today will be “a complicated day in the province” – a bit of an understatement if you ask me.

Safety concerns for supporters

Sevilla’s primary concern centers around fan safety, particularly for those traveling to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium under these treacherous conditions. Government officials have urged the public to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel
  • Stay away from riverbanks and streams
  • Not attempt to cross swollen waterways
  • Monitor official channels for updates

The club has formally communicated to La Liga their preference not to play this evening, but the final decision now rests with the league authorities or relevant government bodies.

Decision pending

Here’s where things get a bit tricky. La Liga’s standard criteria for match postponements typically requires a red alert to be in place, whereas Seville currently sits under an orange warning. This means the Government’s sub-delegation would need to apply pressure for the suspension.

The Segunda División match between Rayo Vallecano and Real Oviedo has already been called off due to similar weather concerns. As it stands, Sevilla are waiting on their bread and butter from La Liga about whether today’s fixture will proceed as scheduled or be pushed to tomorrow.

For traveling Girona supporters planning the journey south, it’s turning into a proper dog’s dinner. Best keep an eye on official announcements before setting off.
