Sevilla vs Girona postponed as Storm Marta batters Andalusia

Saturday's LaLiga clash at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán called off due to severe weather conditions, with the match rescheduled for Sunday at 16:15.

Mother Nature’s put the kibosh on LaLiga’s Saturday schedule as severe weather forces officials to postpone the Sevilla-Girona match until Sunday.

Storm Marta Causes Havoc

The weather’s turned properly biblical in southern Spain, with Storm Marta bringing orange alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across Andalusia. Sevilla FC had been pushing for the postponement with fans’ safety in mind, and they’ve finally got their wish.

Initially, LaLiga weren’t having any of it - the rulebook says you need a red alert to trigger an automatic postponement. But after the government delegation in Sevilla got involved, common sense prevailed and they’ve pulled the plug on today’s fixture.

Rescheduled for Sunday

Rather than leaving it hanging, officials have wasted no time sorting a new slot:

  • Match will now be played Sunday at 16:15 local time
  • Sevilla have provided ticket information on their official website
  • The club fully supports the decision to prioritize fan safety

Club Statement

Sevilla released a statement backing the decision, emphasizing that protecting supporters was the top priority. Many fans would have needed to travel through hazardous conditions across the province to reach the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

The club also expressed solidarity with everyone affected by the succession of storms that have been hammering Andalusia recently. It’s been a right old soaking down there, to put it mildly.

The postponement gives both sides an extra day to prepare, though the quick turnaround means minimal disruption to the fixture calendar. Let’s just hope the weather plays ball tomorrow, or we’ll be back to square one.
