The Next Big Thing at La Fábrica: Luis Paulo emerging as Real Madrid's defensive wall

A look at 17-year-old centre-back Luis Paulo, the quiet Valencia-born talent making waves in Real Madrid's youth setup with his aerial prowess and tactical intelligence.

Rising through the ranks at Valdebebas without making much noise but with undeniable presence, 17-year-old Luis Paulo is quickly becoming one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Real Madrid’s famed academy system.

From Valencia to Valdebebas

The journey of this towering centre-back is a proper tale of football romance. After cutting his teeth in Villarreal’s youth setup, Paulo moved to Valencia’s academy, making the daily trek from his hometown of Vall d’Uixó in Castellón to train at Paterna.

His development didn’t go unnoticed by Spain’s big two, and at the end of the 2023/24 season, the youngster faced a dream dilemma that would make any aspiring footballer’s knees go weak - Barcelona or Real Madrid?

Despite having the Blaugrana offer on the table, Paulo’s heart was set on white. The Real Madrid project and the mystique of La Fábrica proved too appealing to turn down. Football runs in the family too - his maternal uncle previously spent time in both Madrid and Barça’s youth systems, giving young Luis valuable perspective on his career-defining choice.

Defensive dominance

What makes “Luispa” (as he’s known around Valdebebas) stand out is his reliability - absolute gold dust for a centre-half. While modern defenders are expected to be the first attackers, Paulo ticks those boxes with impressive long-range distribution and line-breaking passes.

But it’s at the back where he truly shines:

  • Standing at 1.90m, he combines imposing physical presence with tactical intelligence
  • Dominant in the air - recently demonstrated with a match-winning header against Móstoles
  • Exceptional at defending crosses and reading the game
  • Stylistically compared to Pau Torres for his elegance and positioning
  • Prefers reliability over flashy but risky defensive actions

His performances have already caught the eye of first-team coaches, earning him invitations to train with the senior squad.

Making strides

After an initial adaptation period (common for players moving to Real Madrid’s residence), the 2025/26 season has seen Paulo come into his own. Though officially registered with Juvenil B, where he’s started and completed 90 minutes in four of the last six matches, his stellar performances have already opened doors to Juvenil A.

Such rapid progress led Madrid to secure his future last December, tying him down until 2028. Under Juvenil A’s coaching staff, he’s already made three significant appearances - starting against Unionistas and providing solid defensive contributions off the bench against Diocesano and Badajoz.

With Marcos Jiménez at the helm - a coach renowned for spotting hidden qualities in La Fábrica’s promising talents - Paulo is battling for regular starting spots against tough competition from Mateo Garrido and Leo Lemaitre.

The signs are promising that Real Madrid have found another defensive wall in the making - one they’ll be polishing carefully for the leap to professional football. Another diamond from the famous factory, innit?
