Lewandowski writes his name in history books with landmark goal
The Polish striker's opener against Mallorca sees him join elite company in European football's all-time scoring charts, entering the top 5 goalscorers in league history.
Barcelona’s Polish marksman reaches historic milestone as he continues to prove his worth despite reduced role under Flick.
Robert Lewandowski might be getting on a bit in footballer years, but the Polish hitman showed he’s still got the magic touch as he notched a proper piece of history against Mallorca on Saturday.
Historic achievement
Lewa’s opener against the Balearic Islanders wasn’t just another day at the office - it was his 423rd league goal across his career, putting him joint fifth in the all-time European league goalscoring charts. The Barcelona striker has now equalled the tally set by Yugoslav legend Bobek, who racked up his numbers between 1942 and 1958.
Only four men now stand above Lewandowski in this exclusive club:
- Josef Bican - 518 goals
- Ferenc Puskás - 516 goals
- Cristiano Ronaldo
- Lionel Messi
- Robert Lewandowski - 423 goals (tied with Bobek)
Bican and Puskás remain the only two players to have crossed the 500-goal barrier in European league football - a mountain that even the modern-day greats are still climbing.
Return to form
The goal also marked Lewandowski’s tenth in La Liga this season, sporting the captain’s armband against Jagoba Arrasate’s side. It’s been a bit of a dry spell for the Pole in league action - he hadn’t found the net in La Liga since Barcelona’s first match of 2026 against Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.
Fighting for his place
It’s not been all bread and butter for the veteran striker this term. Despite his pedigree, Lewandowski has lost his guaranteed starter status under Hansi Flick, having to settle for a reduced role in the squad. This week has been different though, with the Pole getting the nod for both fixtures against Albacete and Mallorca.
Despite these challenges, Lewandowski continues to answer his critics the best way he knows how - by putting the ball in the onion bag. He’s now on 13 goals across all competitions this season, with six of those coming since the turn of the year.
Flick might’ve been tight-lipped about Lewandowski’s future during Friday’s presser, but he did encourage the striker to “enjoy the moment” - advice that the Polish international clearly took to heart with another historic strike for his collection.
