Rubi's Almería: The Spanish side that just can't catch a break

From COVID outbreaks to nationwide power cuts, Almería under Rubi have seen an extraordinary run of match postponements over the past two seasons in Segunda División.

Blimey, talk about being cursed! Almería have become the Segunda División’s undisputed champions of postponed fixtures, with an almost comical string of match cancellations during Rubi’s tenure.

A bizarre pattern emerges

Since 2021, the Andalusian club has seen a whopping five matches postponed - four of them coming in the last two seasons alone. What makes this particularly strange is that all these cancellations have occurred with Rubi in charge, both during his first spell and current run at the club.

The sequence of unfortunate events began back in December 2021 when a COVID outbreak at Lugo (with 23 positive cases!) forced their fixture to be rescheduled. But that was just the appetizer for what was to come.

When it rains, it pours

Fast forward to November 2024, and Almería’s home clash with Córdoba fell victim to a red weather alert for torrential rain. While the capital itself escaped the worst, other areas of the province weren’t so lucky.

Then came perhaps the most bizarre postponement of the lot in April 2025:

  • A nationwide power outage left Spain in darkness for nearly a full day
  • Almería vs Racing Ferrol had to be called off as the country slowly recovered
  • Normal service took more than 24 hours to resume

Tragedy strikes

The most heart-wrenching postponement occurred this season on November 9, 2025. Almería’s match against Ceuta was abandoned at half-time following the tragic death of a supporter in the stands at Alfonso Murube stadium. The second half had to be completed weeks later under the shadow of this terrible event.

The latest chapter

And just yesterday, the circus continued. Almería’s away fixture at Cádiz was postponed barely five hours before kickoff due to orange weather warnings for extreme winds and heavy rainfall brought by Storm Leonardo.

The good news? The match has been quickly rearranged for today at 16:15 at the Nuevo Mirandilla stadium, with significantly improved weather conditions expected.

For Rubi and his squad, they’ll be hoping this bizarre streak of postponements is finally coming to an end. Five cancellations in such a short period would test the patience of a saint - or as we say in London, it’s enough to make you lose your boat race!
