Belletti beams with pride as Tommy Marqués makes Barcelona debut
Barça Atlètic coach Juliano Belletti celebrates academy product Tommy Marqués' first-team breakthrough under Hansi Flick against Mallorca.
While Lamine Yamal continues to grab headlines and Barcelona march on in La Liga, another La Masia gem quietly made his first-team bow last weekend, bringing joy to his B team manager Juliano Belletti.
From B team to big time
Tommy Marqués stepped onto the hallowed turf of Spotify Camp Nou wearing the number 43 shirt in the 84th minute against Mallorca, replacing Fermín López. The moment marked another milestone for the youngster who joined Barcelona’s academy setup in 2015 from CE Europa at the under-9 level.
Belletti, the former Barça right-back now in charge of Barça Atlètic, couldn’t hide his satisfaction with his protégé’s progression:
“It’s a pride for me and the entire staff,” said the Brazilian, who has overseen Marqués’ development in the reserves.
The youngster’s rise has been proper rapid this season:
- Made his Barça Atlètic debut on September 7th against UE Porreres
- Has since accumulated 15 appearances for the B team
- Caught Flick’s eye through consistent performances
- Earned 15 first-team call-ups before making his debut
- Regularly trains with the senior squad
Flick’s faith in La Masia
Hansi Flick continues to demonstrate his commitment to Barcelona’s academy tradition. The German tactician has been keeping close tabs on Marqués, regularly including him in first-team training sessions before finally giving him his opportunity.
After the Mallorca match, Flick was full of praise for the debutant: “It’s good for the club to use La Masia. That’s our way of doing things.”
The manager highlighted Marqués’ technical qualities and versatility, noting his confidence on the ball and ability to operate in multiple positions – music to the ears of Barcelona supporters who’ve always had a special place in their hearts for academy graduates.
With the club’s financial situation still not exactly Adam and Eve, Flick’s willingness to blood youngsters offers both sporting and economic benefits. Marqués now joins the growing list of La Masia talents making their mark under the German’s stewardship.
