Cultural Leonesa fume over 'inconsistent' refereeing after Málaga controversy

Spanish second-tier side Cultural Leonesa have issued a strong statement criticizing officiating standards following a controversial disallowed goal at La Rosaleda.

Cultural Leonesa’s patience with Spanish referees has finally snapped after what they see as a series of damaging decisions culminating in a crucial disallowed goal against Málaga.

Rosaleda Robbery?

The Segunda División outfit left La Rosaleda empty-handed after a 2-1 defeat on Sunday, but it’s the 79th minute incident that’s got the club and supporters absolutely livid. With the scores level at 1-1, Diego Collado thought he’d put Cultural ahead only for referee Alonso de Ena Wolf to rule it out for a supposed foul by Sergi Maestre on Dotor.

Even after VAR had a butcher’s at the replay, the decision stood – despite footage suggesting minimal contact at best. Talk about a proper kick in the teeth.

What’s particularly done Cultural’s head in is the apparent double standards in officiating. This wasn’t a one-off – the club believes they’ve been on the wrong end of questionable calls throughout the campaign.

Breaking Point

Even manager José Ángel Ziganda, typically tight-lipped about officials, couldn’t hide his frustration in the post-match presser. While avoiding direct criticism of the referee (and the potential fine that comes with it), the Navarrese gaffer made it clear he’s feeling the injustice.

The club subsequently released a statement highlighting their concerns:

“We’re especially concerned about the lack of coherence in applying regulations depending on the scenario,” Cultural noted, pointing to what they perceive as unequal treatment.

Demanding Respect

Cultural Leonesa aren’t asking for special treatment – just consistency. The statement makes clear they “demand the respect we deserve” while requesting that refereeing decisions “respond to fair, balanced and consistent criteria.”

The club, now in their centenary era, emphasized they remain confident of achieving their seasonal objectives despite these setbacks, praising both the squad and coaching staff for their professionalism under trying circumstances.

They’ve also acknowledged their supporters’ unwavering backing during this frustrating period – a proper class touch from a club feeling hard done by the men in black.
